The International Society of Exposure Science was founded in 1989 aiming at the advancement of the science of exposure assessment related to environmental contaminants, both for human populations and ecosystems. Its objective is to foster and advance exposure science related to environmental contamination in human populations and ecosystems; promote communication among exposure analysts, epidemiologists, toxicologists, and other scientists; recommend approaches to substantive or methodological concerns; and strengthen the impact of exposure assessment and analysis on environmental policy. In specific, ISES is:

  • A specialty society focused on understanding the complex inter-relationships between human populations and communities, ecosystems, wildlife, and chemical, biological, radiological and other physical stressors, be they natural or be they anthropometric (in practise, ISES has focussed strongly on chemical stressors).

  • An influential professional society with a mission to serve our members and advance the field of exposure science. Membership to ISES will make a difference in furthering this mission and having opportunities to meet others who share the passion for exposure science.

The objective of ISES Europe shall be to foster and advance exposure science needed to safeguard European citizens from environment-related pressures and risks to health and well-being. ISES Europe will be an independent platform where stakeholders from society can exchange information and construct dialogues aiming at the identification of current and future scientific and policy needs and opportunities. ISES Europe will use the best dissemination strategies to ensure that needs and opportunities are communicated to relevant stakeholder groups such as academia, research funders, CEO's and competent authorities.

ISES Europe will build a European Exposure Science Strategy with a roadmap 2020-2025-2030. The main priorities have been set with six thematic areas.

1. Data Repositories & Analytics

2. Exposure Data Production & Monitoring

3. Regulatory Exposure Assessment Science

4. Exposure Assessment Methods & Tools

5. Building Partnerships & Collaboration

6. Exposure Education & Communication
